Functions of Universal Joint

Universal Joint is a particular type of connection between two shafts, whose axes are
  inclined to each other

The two axes intersect and assume different inclinations at different times

This joint permits the rotation of two shafts about their own axes

Universal Joint accounts for the up and down movements of the rear axle when the vehicle
  is running

Why two shafts are inclined ?:

The engine, clutch and gearbox are fixed to the chassis frame with the help of rubber
   mountings

Where as rear axle is suspended under the chassis with springs and moves up and down
  due to road irregularities

Angle of drive is never constant and goes on changing
