Functions of Universal Joint

• Universal Joint is a particular type of connection between two shafts, whose axes are 

  inclined to each other

 

• The two axes intersect and assume different inclinations at different times

 

•This joint permits the rotation of two shafts about their own axes 

 

• Universal Joint accounts for the up and down movements of the rear axle when the vehicle 

  is running

 

 Why two shafts are inclined ?:

 

• The engine, clutch and gearbox are fixed to the chassis frame with the help of rubber 

   mountings

 

• Where as rear axle is suspended under the chassis with springs and moves up and down 

  due to road irregularities

 

•Angle of drive is never constant and goes on changing
