Torque Converter Operation

•When engine is running idle, pump produces a slow circulation of oil flow

•It is not sufficient to move the turbine

•When throttle is open wide, engine speed increases

•Pump moves faster and projects the oil towards the turbine

•But still it is not sufficient to turn the turbine

•Therefore oil redirected to the pump with out loss in velocity

•Net effect of redirection of flow is to increase the pump output

•The pump output under these conditions is the output velocity that it is creating because of

the engine torque, plus input velocity of the redirected oil

•A built up output velocity of two to three times the output velocity as engine alone achieved

 when turbine is stationery

•This makes the turning force of the turbine to three times that of engine

•Increased torque of the turbine enables it to rotate and thus drives the input shaft

•By this action it transmits the power to geared section of the transmission

•Torque converter increases the torque ratio about 2:1 to 3:1

•It serves the purpose of a gear box in a better way

•In gear box variation of gear ratios in finite number of steps only

•Where as in torque converter the torque variation is continuous

•However efficiency of the torque converter is high only with narrow limits of speed
