• The
wheel hub is mounted on the axle casing

inner end of the axle shaft is splined and is supported by the final drive unit

outer end of the axle shaft have flanges, which are connected to the flanged
sleeve
by means of bolts
• Two taper roller bearing are used
to support the axle casing in the wheel hub
• The axle shaft carry only driving
and braking torques

weight of the vehicle, torque reaction and end thrust are carried by the axle
casing
• This
type of arrangement is costly
• Widely used in heavy vehicles.
• The axle shafts can be taken out or
replaced without lifting the wheel / removing the nuts
