Working of Four Wheel Drive

From the engine, clutch and transmission assembly, a short propeller shaft transmits the
power to a transfer gear box shown in the center of the vehicle

The transfer gear box divides the torque equally between the front and rear wheels

From the transfer gear box one propeller shaft connects the rear axle and the other to
  front axle

The front axle gears and differential are of similar or the same construction as the rear axle

Apart from power transmission, the front axle allows the front wheels to be turned for
  steering

Further there is a provision in the control of the transfer gear box so that front wheel drive
may be disengaged when not required

This type of drive is used in military trucks, jeeps and special purpose vehicles
