Types of Rear Axle

1.semi floating axle:

• In all the methods for axle supporting, the axle shaft has to take the driving and braking
  torques

• The difference in the designs vary depending upon which of the other loads taken by the
  axle shaft

• The wheel hub is directly connected to the axle shaft.

• The inner end of the axle shaft is splined and is supported by the final drive unit

The outer end is supported by a single bearing inside the axle casing

All the loads listed earlier in the previous session are taken by the axle shaft

• As the axle shaft supports all the loads, the diameter has to be larger when compared to

other shafts transmitting same amount of torque

• This type of arrangement is the simplest and cheapest of all other types

• Widely used in cars
