Types of Four Wheel Drive

Based on construction there are two types:

Part time four wheel drive

Fulltime four wheel drive

 Part time four wheel drive:

Usually, when car makers say that a car has four-wheel drive, they are referring to a
  part-time system

The transfer case on a part-time four-wheel-drive system locks the front-axle driveshaft to
   the rear-axle driveshaft

Part-time systems like this should only be used in low -traction situations such as off-road
   or on snow or ice

On dry concrete or good roads,  the four-wheel drive should be disengaged in order to
avoid high fuel consumption and extra wear on the tires and drive train
