Multi plate clutch

                           MULTI PLATECLUTCH

Why multi plate clutch is used?

For example, to  transmit 10kw power 1200mm2 clutch plate contact area is required

    as per the design calculations.

Instead of providing one big clutch plate of contact area1200mm2
•six clutch plates each of 200mm2  will reduce the size of the clutch
Space limitation such as in two wheelers and racing cars

     Construction details

Construction details of   fly wheel, Pressure plate &  Clutch release mechanism is same
     as  in single plate clutch

    Construction details- Clutch plates

Instead of only one clutch plate as in single plate clutch,In this type more number of clutch

    plates provided

Clutch plates are of two types
    • Drive clutch plates
    •Driven clutch plates

    Construction details- Clutch plates
The drive clutch plates are fixed to the engine shaft
•The driven clutch plates are fixed to the clutch shaft
•The drive and driven clutch plates are alternately fixed

The drive clutch plate slides in grooves on the fly wheel
•The driven clutch plate slides on splines of the pressure plate

Drive clutch plates has outer splines and driven clutch plate has inner splines
•Drive and driven clutch plates are firmly pressed by coil springs

    Working
    When clutch engaged
•Spring forces the pressure plate towards flywheel
    • The drive and driven clutch plates held together
•Power flows from engine shaft to clutch shaft

    When clutch disengage
    •Pressure plate moves back
•Drive and driven clutch plates separated
•Clutch shaft speed reduces slowly and finally
     stops rotating
