Gear Box and Functions, Types of gear box

Why is the Gear box required for the Automobile :

The Automobile requires high torque when climbing hills and when starting, even though

they are performed  at low speeds

When driving power is required ,it reduces the engine speed and transmits stronger

torque to the driving wheels and   when high running speed is desired, it transmits

high–speed  low – torque to the wheels.

In addition, the transmission serves to reverse the vehicle

The transmission is installed immediately behind the clutch and is controlled by the gear

shift lever in the driver’s compartment

 Functions of the gear boX:

 • To provide a means to vary the leverage or torque ratio between the engine and the road

   wheels as required

 • To provide reversing the direction

 • To provide a neutral position so that the engine and the road wheels are disconnected

even with the clutch in the engaged position

 Types of Gear Box

Gear boxes are classified according to the gear

  arrangements and gear shifting mechanisms
