Why is the Gear box required for
the Automobile :
•
The Automobile requires high torque when climbing hills and when starting, even though
they are performed
at low speeds
•
When driving power is required ,it reduces the engine speed and transmits stronger
torque to the driving wheels and
when high running speed is desired, it transmits
high–speed low – torque to the wheels.
• In addition, the transmission
serves to reverse the vehicle
•
The transmission is installed immediately behind the clutch and is controlled by the gear
shift lever in the driver’s compartment
•
To provide a means to vary the leverage or torque
ratio between the engine and the road
wheels as
required
•
To provide reversing the direction
•
To provide a neutral position so that the engine and the road wheels are disconnected
even with the
clutch in the engaged position
